Social media has been a part of everyday human life for interaction. People use these media tools to inform and engage their peer, networks through various platforms by sharing relevant information, news, thoughts and experiences. These tools apply highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques that use web-based technologies availing a forum for the people.


There are various types of social media that includes MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Flicker, YouTube, Wikis, Blogs and many more others. These tools are used to store, aggregate, share, discuss or deliver information within online communities aiming to inform, educate and persuade among their networks. Just a decade ago, sharing and dissemination of information and updates were mainly based on mass media which was and still a sort of one way communication where the chances of interaction is minimal. Over the contents shared via social media can be edited and commented by the recipients quicker. The social media are changing the way people and organizations communicate making easier for interactive communication due to the creation of new media.


However, these tools are not only limited to the distribution and exhibition, often these tools act as an institution. Mass communications theorist Danish Macquail considers new media are as much as an institution of private as well as public communications and are regulated (or not) accordingly. Therefore, the individual or groups who create or connect with those media enjoy the greater autonomy through the uses of information technology.


With the blend of new media and information technology, today's world see there are adequate information being shared ever in the past and people are empowered that ultimately contributes to establish an information society.

One of the significant achievements brought by information technology is information society in 21st century. It is a type of society, where people are connected with information, share each other and interact quicker as fast as possible. The culture of sharing and storing information within their network through social media helps to make an informed society and better understanding that avails everyone either act or react. According to McQuail, the idea of the information society is the most relevant and overarching framework for understanding contemporary society. As social media serve as the information hub, it provides enormous details about various aspects of the society that goes on various online or offline platforms.


People create platform those have common interest in order to achieve some specific objective based on their background, knowledge, skill, vision and mission. In most of the cases, they link with the platforms to make their voice louder by sharing various contents in different forms. People share not only their own thoughts but also like to share others' within own networks as per their interest which contributes to promote participation through platforms. Often those platforms turn into a powerful weapon for advocacy and lobby in order to influence and create impacts.


Examples have shown the power of using social media largely for social causes including politics. In fact, these social media has incredible influence to enable its user and online communities to reach global audiences through their locally fed contents. These platforms then act as power center although they perform in an informal way. To keep their network active and updated, the sharing through networks keeps them alive and makes their issue vibrant that is the reason the user of social media are increased day by day.
