SINDHUPALCHOWK, Aug 7: Assistant health worker Udiram Khadka was posted to a sub health post in Batase, Sindhupalchowk a year ago. However, he never came to the district that is facing acute shortage of health workers. Instead, he is on deputation under the tourism ministry.

“It is so surprising, we simply don´t know which system is working. The health workers and doctors posted here work somewhere else even under some other ministry without any notice,” said Krishna Mijar, public health officer at Sindhupalchowk. [break]

According to Mijar, Khadka´s case is just one example. There is list of people who never arrive at the health posts and hospitals in the district even though they have been handed over their posting letters. “In addition, the subject in question or the department he is associated with does not even feel the need to inform us of the development. We have to investigate it!” Mijar added.

Health services at remote areas are hard as it has become a sort of culture among government health employees to seek deputation in urban centers or managed to get themselves transferred to other areas. “The system does not seem to be in control of anyone, so it is difficult to take action against the guilty,” said Mijar.

Mijar said the district quota for a doctor, 10 health assistants, 21 assistant health workers and 34 village health workers is yet unfulfilled. “And the people are deprived of full service that they should be getting,” he added.
