Sources at the NSC say chances of Shrestha tendering his resignation on Thursday are high. Shrestha, who was appointed to the post by the CPN-UML, is feeling uneasy to continue in his post, the sources added. Shrestha is consulting with his supporters and well-wishers along with the party on the issue.
According to sources, Minister for Youth and Sports Ganesh Tiwari Nepali had a long talk with Shrestha on Tuesday. During the talk, Minister Nepali reportedly asked Shrestha to cooperate with him by resigning from his post. However, nothing was agreed during the meeting.
Talking to myrepublica.com, Shrestha declined to confirm that he was resigning. He, however, indicated that some concrete decisions would come within the next 24 hours. "This uncertainty will not help Nepali sports. I am not interested to stick to my post. But since this is a political appointment, there should be a political solution to the issue," Shrestha said, adding," Wait till tomorrow, you will know everything by then."
However, Shrestha expressed his commitment to continue in the sports sector. Shrestha was appointed to the post after the popular movement in 2006. He is the alternative central committee member of CPN-UML. Shrestha is also the president of Nepal Ski Association and vice-president of Nepal Olympic Committee.
According to UML sources, the party has suggested Shrestha not to take any decision in haste, saying that the leader of the party is heading the government.
Minister Nepali has publicly said that he would appoint someone from his party to the post on the basis of consensus.
