Shrestha, who has often courted controversies, was appointed the president of NAAA ad hoc committee on July 29 by NSC Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama. Lama had dissolved the previous committee led by General Secretary Rabiraj Rajkarnikar. Lama had accused the Rajkarnikar committee of being involved in human trafficking and not conducting general assembly for nine years.
NSC had entrusted Shrestha with the responsibility of conducting general assembly within 60 days.
However, the election of Shrestha committee has raised doubts over Nepali athletes´ participation in international events. NAAA has not yet been recognized by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), the supreme athletics body of the world.
General Secretary Rabiraj Rajkarnikar has time and again challenged the Shrestha-led committee to get international recognition. "I will quit if Shrestha committee gets recognition from the IAAF," Rajkarnikar had recently told Republica.
However, Shrestha has said that getting international recognition is not a big deal and his committee would get international recognition very soon.
