KATHMANDU, March 21: A group of Maoist and UML second-rung leaders, who are closely involved in inter-party negotiations, have gathered at a hotel in Nagarkot in a bid to settle contentious issues of army integration and constitution writing.

A participant said leaders from Nepali Congress (NC) are expected to join the discussion by Thursday morning.[break]

The leaders are among those who cancelled their scheduled trips to Switzerland after being widely criticized for leaving the country at a crucial juncture.

Krishna Bahadur Mahara, Janardan Sharma, Jaypuri Gharti Magar and Khimlal Devkota from the UCPN (Maoist) and Pradip Gyawali, Bhim Rawal and Ushakala Rai from the UML have gathered there.

The gathering has been held to prepare grounds for the Special Committee meeting that is expected to take some crucial decision to take the stalled peace process forward.

“Our first priority is to settle the remaining issues of integration but we will also discuss major thorny issues in constitution writing simultaneously,” a participant told Republica.

The meeting of key negotiators from the major political parties has been keenly observed as it is taking place just ahead of the Special Committee meeting and the meeting of the top leaders of three major political parties.

A senior leader knowledgeable of the development said the top leaders have entrusted some of the influential second-rung leaders to thrash out the knotty issues by Thursday.
