KATHMANDU, Jan 16: The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday ordered Chief District Office, Siraha to release 64 Indian nationals who were held hostage by a brick kiln in Siraha.

A division bench of Chief Justice Khil Raj Regmi and Justice Kalyan Shrestha issued the order to this effect after a hearing on a writ petition filed on the basis of a complaint failed by one of the hostage to the personal secretariat of the chief justice. [break]

"This is probably the first case that a writ petition has been filed on the basis of a complaint lodged at the personal secretariat of the chief justice," said Assistant Spokesperson of SC Hemant Rawal.

The apex court also ordered Chief District Office, Siraha to make necessary arrangements to send the hostages back to their country.

Sewa Ram, one of the hostages, had sent a complaint to the personal secretariat of the chief justice seeking their release from the brick kiln. "The complaint was transformed into a writ petition," said Rawal.

Earlier, a single bench of Justice Shrestha on January 11 had ordered District Court, Siraha to report the apex court about the issue.

A team of District Court, Siraha had found 64 Indian nationals were held hostage, forced to work without wages, proper food and accommodation for last two months at Om Brick Industry.
