KATHMANDU, April 2: The Supreme Court on Friday issued an interim order prohibiting closure of essential services including hospitals.

A bench of Chief Justice Ram Prasad Shrestha and Justice Khila Raj Regmi issued the order in response to a writ petition filed by the Consumers´ Rights Protection Forum (CRPF) against the closure of services at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH). [break]

The apex court also ordered the local administration to monitor to ensure smooth operation of essential services.

Services at TUTH had been affected since March 15 and emergency services halted since March 23 following a strike by doctors, students and teachers against alleged rigging of entrance exams for postgradute studies in medicine by the dean of the Institute of Medicine (IOM).

The hospital resumed services on Thursday after the Education Ministry formed a five-member committee on Wednesday to investigate all irregularities at IOM since the last academic year.
