Saving more to gain more

KATHMANDU, May 6: We in Nepal know how precious electricity is. We wait out the hours in darkness and we rejoice when we get electricity 15 minutes earlier than the scheduled time.

Growing up in an age when we are so dependent on technology which is largely dependent on electricity, what are the youth doing to conserve it? [break]

Are we using it recklessly thinking we have it only for a few hours or we actually taking any steps to preserve electricity? What are you doing as an individual?

Since life has been made easier with mobile phones and with internet so readily available in our palms, most of us might be reducing time in front of the computer screen.

Nirmal Chettri says,” I use my smart phone. It’s enough to do almost everything.” Rajesh Bhandari from Butwal echoes the sentiment, “I use my mobile for internet access rather than a computer or a laptop. So the electricity consumption is reduced. I do charge my laptop but I use it by minimizing the graphics which saves my battery and hence, energy.”

For most of us, the best way we can contribute to preserve energy is by switching off.

Srijana Subba, 23, a BBS student of Mahendra Multiple Campus points out, “I believe in using CFL light bulbs as they are great energy savers. I switch off lights, heaters or any electronic device when not in use. I would also encourage using more solar energy.”

As Amnaya Paudel puts it, “I just simply switch off. I switch off lights if they are not in use, switch off any other electronic devices if I am not using them. This will lower the electricity bill, increase the inverter’s life and conserve electricity too. It is a simple and effective method of conserving energy.”

So let each of us do our part. Start by walking across your hall to switch off lights. Saves you the electricity bill and saves us some energy.
