A student, Sulav Dahal admits that he is someone who can’t save. “It would be very difficult, if not impossible,” he says. “Sometimes, we students don’t have enough money for even a cup of tea in these chilly times. In such cases, how can we save?” questions Dahal. However, he says that it’s a good habit to save starting from the younger days of our lives, but it would be insulting your valuable life to compromise on the necessities in life just for the sake of saving.
Sushant Thapa also agrees with Dahal on the fact that as students, it’s rather difficult to save. “Since we have limited monthly budgets, which are most often provided by parents, fulfilling our monthly requirements along with saving sounds impossible,” he says. But, Thapa, reckons that it will be comparatively easier when one starts working and earning money.
Things are easier said than done and we might realize that it is difficult to set aside money, even when you’re earning on your own, for the future. The trick, they say, is to start with small steps. Saving a little at a time and then accomplishing the goal. Making money just for the sake of saving might mean cutting back on expenses or finding ways to increase one’s income. However, because there are those who manage to save, we know that ‘impossible’ is a hyperbole which is achievable.
“Yes, I think saving is possible while working and even as a student,” says Banjara Rajesh, on our Facebook page. “It depends on the will. If there is a will there is a way. There’s no doubt that younger people should learn to save money,” he adds.
Similarly, Prasim Gurung says that saving is controlling unnecessary expenditure and needs and can be done even when one isn’t working or earning money. “If you insist on saving, resist yourself from temptations, and consider your future important, then, for the sake of the dreams you see, it’s possible to save,” he says.
To save is to be safe, for the future. It’s a habit that we should inculcate in ourselves and it’s never too early to start saving. With a limited budget, this act will seem tough. But maybe you give up an extra cup of tea a day, sacrifice going to the movies once in a while or cut down on consumption of junk food. Maybe you’ll save ten rupees a day or a thousand rupees a week. Whatever it is, by saving you know that at least when it there is unexpected rain, you will be able to afford an umbrella.
