Samyukta Devi, 35, of Diman VDC-3 in the district breathed her last on Thursday while undergoing treatment at B.P Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Dharan. According to doctors at the hospital, she expired as she had sustained 90 percent burn injuries.[break]
She had been receiving treatment at the hospital after she was allegedly set on fire by her in-laws on Monday night.
Members from the maternal side of the deceased has alleged that Samyukta was killed by dousing kerosene in her body by her husband, mother-in-law and brother-in-law among others. They have also said that Samyukta has been facing a court case on share of the property against her in-laws.
However, her in-laws claimed that she was burnt to death after her clothes caught fire while she was cooking.
Jamuna Prasad Chaudhary, Samyukta’s father, said on Friday that his daughter was killed for the sake of additional dowry and property. “My daughter was burnt alive by her in-laws as we could not provide the sufficient dowry to them,” said Chaudhary.
He said Samyukta’s husband Shiva Kumar, mother-in-law Maya Devi, her husband’s elder brother Raj Kumar, her husband’s younger brother Binay Kumar and her husband’s sister Kabita Devi are solely responsible for the gruesome death.
Following the incident, Chaudhary has also lodged a complaint with the District Police Office Saptari Friday demanding strong action against those involved in the ‘killing’.
Samyukta had tied knot with Shik Kumar in 1998. According to Chaudhary, he had provided enough dowry. But a few months after the marriage, her in-laws started giving her mental and physical torture demanding more dowry.
After the torment crossed the limit, Samyukta had been living in her maternal house over the last seven years.
However, the accused in-laws family members are out of contact. Despite repeated attempt by our correspondent, they could not be contact for their comment into the incident.
Meanwhile, DSP Shyam Singh Chaudhary, spokespers of the DPO informed that they are minutely investigating into the incident. “We will punish the offender,” said he.
