KATHMANDU, April 30: The ruling parties have reiterated the present coalition would continue in office until a new constitution is promulgated and have questioned the motive behind the opposition parties´ demands for the formation of a new consensus government at this critical time.

The coalition partners met Monday morning to discuss demands by Nepali Congress (NC) and the CPN-UML to form a consensus government. The opposition raised the demand during a meeting of major political parties on Sunday.[break]

"There is no possibility of a change until the present government promulgates a pro-people constitution," said a statement from the Prime Minister´s Office.

The ruling parties further said in the statement, "The demand of some political parties for change of the government is ridiculous as it comes just 28 days before the new constitution is supposed to be promulgated, and this time should instead be used to try and resolve the contentious issues of the constitution making."

Emerging from the meeting Energy Minister Post Bahadur Bogati said any discussion on the formation of a new consensus government would distract parties from the main task of constitution writing.

"The way the issue of formation of national consensus government has been raised will overshadow constitution writing process," said Bogati. "Let us first conclude the constitution and then form the consensus government. Let us make a package deal to this effect," Bogati said.

Another politician, Hridayesh Tripathi said the coalition partners agreed to move ahead to conclude the constitution writing process.

"Any proposal that will create hurdle in constitution writing process will not be acceptable to us," Tripathi stated.
