KATHMANDU, March 8: In light of International Woman’s Day, the Indian Cultural Center (ICC) in Kathmandu will be giving a presentation entitled “Roles that Women Play.” The event is slated for Wednesday, March 9, at Hotel Shangri - La from 2-5 pm.

The presentation will highlight the views on women in Nepal.

“The whole concept isn’t just about raising women’s issues but also to bring out where we are lacking in - women themselves will speak about themselves and about their problems.[break]

This is no feminist movement, it’s just to celebrate International Women’s Day,” said ICC Program Officer, Avas Karmacharya.

Veteran Nepali artiste duo Hari Bansha Acharya and Madan Krishna Shrestha will inaugurate the event to be followed by presentations.

The speakers include lawyer and member of Nepal’s Constituent Assembly Sapana Malla Pradhan and Dr Arundhatie Kundal, who campaigns for women’s rights.

Other speakers are former Miss Nepal Malvika Subba, Director of ICC Dr Geeti Sen, founder of Samsung Plaza Seema Golchha, litterateur Mr Jagdish Rana and the founder of Creative Statements and the woman behind annual ‘Celebrating Womanhood Award’ Shrijana Singh Yonjan.

The topics range from “Women and the Judiciary”, “Women or Goddess” to “Women Writers of Nepal”.

Yonjan will be speaking on “The Unknown Women of Nepal” to identify and highlight the women who aren’t in the limelight.

“Frankly speaking I’m sick of seeing the same women talking about gender issues and what women empowerment is but has the status of women reached where it should?” she asks.

“I’m not happy with the issue of women empowerment,” she said, adding, “Instead of just criticizing, let’s take a look at other women especially at the grass root level.”

Seema Golchha, who will make a presentation on “Women in the Corporate World”, says, “Given the trend, women in the corporate sector is a very relevant and important topic that needs to be discussed.

” Based on her personal experiences and those of her role models, she will address the problems that arise in connection with working women in a business world.

“By talking about it, hopefully it will bring about awareness,” says Karmacharya.

The event is by invite only and will be followed by Hi-Tea on the lawns of Hotel Shangri~La.
