Several road sections in Gulmi municipality and 75 VDCs are in pathetic condition affecting transportation services. Had there been proper monitoring by the authorities of all the road construction works, the road sections would have been a lot better.
“In lack of better estimation and engineering, huge sums of money poured into road construction works stand to go waste. The local politicians responsible for developmental activities often divert their attention to other activities and seek out personal benefits,” said a local.
The construction of Bhanjyang-Bharjuwa-Pasti-Arewa road section had begun in the year 2007. Only two years ago, its construction was inscribed in government's red book. Last year, a budget of Rs 1.7 million was frozen without any work. Initially allocated for the construction of 22 road sections, only 4 kilometers of road section has been built so far.
Khum Bahadur Thapa, chairperson of the road section user's committee, said most of the budget money has gone into modeling and construction of the cliffs along the road section. “Over Rs 5 million of the budget was used for cliff modeling alone. Proper estimation of road construction is hardly followed in Nepal,” said Thapa.
The condition of Ratdada-Bhanjyan and Paudi-Darling road section is no less different. Although the construction work had started in 2004, the road section still remains incomplete.
According to Gyan Kumar Buda, chairperson of the road sections users' group, over Rs 5 million has been used in the construction but the road section still remains damaged and incomplete.
“Over the years, locals have already started planting crops on the gravel road sections. This is the consequence of improper monitoring and estimation of construction work,” said Buda.
Similar is the condition of a dozen other road sections in Gulmi district despite millions of rupees being plowed over the years into the construction works.
