Rights bodies demand action against Ranju's murderers

LAHAN, March 30: Human rights organizations on Friday submitted a memorandum to Chairman of the Interim Election Council Khil Raj Regmi requesting impartial action against the alleged murderers of Ranju Nayak of Lahan.



Rights organizations including the Human Rights Commission submitted the memorandum, claiming that the accused party is trying bribe the police. [break]



“We have also alerted the National Women Commission in this regard. Murder and torture of women should not be tolerated,” said Coordinator of Women Rehabilitation Centre (WOREC) Lek Bahadur Katuwal.



Ramesh Nayak, 38, had allegedly thrashed her 25-year-old wife Ranju to death in their home in Lahan-5 on March 26. According to the complaint filed by Ranju´s maternal relatives, she was beaten mercilessly and later forced to consume mosquito repellent liquid. Ranju breathed her last while undergoing treatment at Lahan Hospital.



Lahan Police has detained Ramesh along with Ranju´s mother-in-law Ganga and sister-in-law Gauri on suspicion of their involvement in the murder.



According to a source, the accused have been trying to settle the case by bribing the police.



“We have demanded action against the guilty,” said representative of INSEC Dhruva Pariyar.
