The police detained 16 human rights activists at the Metropolitan Police Circle, Kamal Pokhari and released them after three hours in custody.
The human rights activists Sudeep Pathak, Kanakmani Dixit, Charan Prasain, Dinesh Tripathi, Birendra Thapaliya, Bhanubhakta Dhakal, Amuda Shrestha and Rina Shrestha were arrested for staging the sit-in. [break]
Ninteen-year-old Adhikari was abducted from Bakulahar Chowk, Ratna Nagar Municipality in Chitwan on June 2004 by then Maoists and killed the next day.
Following the death threats from Maoists, the Adhikari family was displaced from Fugel VDC, their village in Gorkha district.
A petition was filed by Nanda Prasad, father of Krishna Prasad, seeking an action against those involved in the murder. Adhikari had accused UCPN (Maoist) as a culprit in the petition, which remains undecided at the court.
Adhikari couple´s health worsens
Meanwhile, Nanda Prasad Adhikari and his wife Ganga Maya Adhikari are on fast-unto-death since eight days at the Bir Hospital, demanding the government to investigate the case and bring the culprit to book.
The doctors involved in their treatment have said that the couple´s health is worsening as they have refused any medical treatment.
“Doctors have said that Nanda Prasad is more critical and he may suffer multiple organ failure any time,” said human rights activist Dinesh Tripathy.
Meanwhile, a delegation of UCPN Maoist cadres from Gorkha met former Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai to remind the party about Adhikari murder case.
Januka Poudel, member of the Newa State Committee mentioned that party leaders will soon respond to the whole issue. "The party wants all the cases of violation of human rights during conflict period be handled through the Peace and Reconciliation Commission,” Bhattarai told the delegation on the day.
