Right activists getting death threats

DAILEKH, Jan 14: Human rights activists and civil society leaders, who are pressing the local administration to bring those involved in the killing of journalist Dekendra Thapa to book, are getting death threats from cadres of both UCPN (Maoist) and CPN-Maoist.



Accusing the rights activists of trying to frame their comrades in Dekendra Thapa case, the Maoist cadres on Sunday warned a group of right activists of dire consequences if they continued with their pressure program.[break]



According to Dalit and women rights activists, Parbati Bisunke, the Maoist cadres approached her while she was attending a program in Kalbhairav VDC and said those involved in protest programs against the Maoist cadres would face serious consequences. “Journalists made a mistake by raising the Dekendra Thapa case. Now, they will have to face the consequences,” she quoted a Maoist cadre as saying to her.



She also told Republica that other rights activists involved in protest programs against the Maoists have received similar threats.



Meanwhile, six political parties have warned the local administration that it would have to face public ire if right activists are harmed by the Maoist cadres. “The local administration cannot imagine what would happen if a single rights activists is harmed,” said Krishna Kumar BC, Doti district president of Nepali Congress



“The Maoists will be uprooted from the district if they take any action against the people of Dailekh,” said Shiva Gaule, president of Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ).



Woman rights activist Dipa Bohara demanded strong action against Maoist cadres issuing death threats against rights activists.

Representatives of six political parties in the district, civil society leaders and journalists have also condemned the threat, stating that Maoists have violated the rule of law in the country.



Meanwhile, representatives of six political parties and civil society leaders have warned the local administration that it would be held responsible for the consequences if the process of recording statements of the accused is not completed within three days. They are preparing to hold a massive demonstration on January 16.
