KATHMANDU, July 30: CPN-UML leader KP Oli said he was surprised by Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal’s refusal to step down.

The Prime Minister himself was one of the signees of the five-point agreement that demands his resignation, he said speaking at a function in the Capital on Saturday. [break]

Reshuffling the Cabinet at a time when efforts were on to form a consensus government will affect timely completion of peace process and constitution drafting, he said.

He claimed that the parties’ agreement to extend the Constituent Assembly’s deadline again will bring ‘catastrophe’ in the country.

Saying that the government formed under the UML leadership hasn’t been able to implement the party’s program, he said the present government was UML’s government only in legal definition.

CPN-UML General Secretary Ishwor Pokharel said that his party was against reshuffling the Cabinet as such a move will be detrimental to politics of consensus.

UML cannot stand in favour of swearing in new ministers and Prime Minister’s resignation for consensus at the same time, he said addressing a function in the Capital on Saturday.

The Unified CPN (Maoist) was trying to trap the other parties in the wave of its intra-party disputes by floating the idea to replace its old faces in the Cabinet with new ones, he said.

Maintaining that both the crucial tasks of peace process and constitution drafting have been moving at snail’s pace, he said the Maoist party hasn’t come clean on the issue of army integration.

At the program, Constituent Assembly member Sabitra Bhusal said that confusion has prevailed in the country because the major parties were still undecided on peace process.
