At least 150 others were still missing, Reuter said quoting Jayanta Narayan Choudhury, police chief of the state of Assam where the boat sank.
The ferry carrying about 350 people had broken into two pieces in the river. Reports said around 150 passengers swam to safety or were rescued by villagers.
The accident occurred near Fakiragram village in west Dhubri district, about 350 kilometers west of the state capital, Guwahati, and close to where the Brahmaputra River enters Bangladesh.
Reports said strong winds and rain likely caused the accident.
Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh issued a statement expressing shock and grief at the loss of life.
