KATHMANDU, Sept 20: 11 year-old Renuka Shrestha from Mahendra Gram Secondary School, Lalitpur was declared winner of the art competition organized by United Nations Regional Center for Peace and Disarmament in Asia (UNRCPD) coinciding with the 2013 International Day of Peace and the launch of UNRCPD’s online video on peace education in Nepal. The competition, like last year, was themed ‘Peace for Everyone’. [break]

Shrestha received a certificate, a stipend towards her education, stationery goods, and a laminated copy of her own drawing at the Award Ceremony held at Hotel Himalaya on Friday.

Students from Grade 5-8 from 12 schools from Kathmandu participated in the art competition this year, and produced 907 art works, expressing what peace means to them, their family and their country.

Director of UNRCPD, Sharon Riggle remarked, “Being able to interact with schoolchildren during our annual art competition is one of the highlights of my job. It warms my heart to see the enthusiasm the children bring to their art and I’m particularly delighted that the children have really embraced the spirit of peace, which will impact their daily lives.”
