CHITWAN, Oct 11: Pohara Bote, 64, of Gorkha was diagnosed with stones in his kidneys two years ago. With the poor financial condition Bote visited Kathmandu searching for affordable treatment but was forced to live with the disease until recently after he learnt that it would cost him over 70 thousand rupees.
Like Bote, poor people who don´t have access to the treatment due to the financial burden have no any option but to die with the renal complication. Bote was lucky enough to get the treatment of his ailments in low cost as he spend only 5,000 rupees to get his kidneys stones removed through an operation, which would have cost him at least Rs 25,000.
Doctors at Chitawan Medical Colleges of Sciences on Saturday successfully operated on him with the help of new technology called Percutaneous Nephrostomy procedure, in which stones are fragmented to small sizes enough to drain out the stones through a tube placed in the kidney.
After over 2 hours effort, team of doctors led by Santosh Jha, successfully extracted the stones from Bote´s kidney. There have been other seven patients suffering from the kidney stones are in the queue waiting their turn for the operation in the college.
According to Urologist Dr Nirmal Lamichhane, The College has organized an operation camp to make the new technology and its benefits available to the access of the general people who has been living with the stones in their kidney and devoid of the medical treatment due to the financial problems.
The team of several surgeons led by Dr Jha has come to Chitwan and providing low cost treatment for the kidney stone patients. “We can provide the service on our own but the camp will be to exchange the way of work and the experience between the two colleges”, said Dr Lamichane.
He also informed that the new technology would help the patient recuperate quickly as there would be no big wound during the surgery. The camp will run till Sunday.
Dr Aman Agrawal said if all the hospital in the country organizes this sort of camp, the patients of the kidney stones lacking financial resources would have benefitted greatly. According to doctors, 15 patients visit the hospitals in Chitawan seeking operation of the kidney stones.
