KATHMANDU, June 14: Grass Root Movement in Nepal (GMIN) and Children and Youth First (CYF), both not for profit youth organizations, jointly organized a fundraiser event titled “2 for Change” featuring live reggae music by Joint Family Internationale at Patan Museum, Patan Durbar Square, on Sunday, June 12.

Though a handful of people attended the event, they were banging heads and moving along with the beats of reggae.[break]

The children sponsored by CYF showcased “Nepal Banda”, a play directed by Raju Kunwar from CYF which depicted how students have been suffering from frequent strikes.

The boys from CYF also entertained the crowd with their B-boying skills. CYF has been giving B-boying classes to the children every Saturday.

“We’ve collaborated to convey the message that NGOs shouldn’t compete with one another,” said Ravi Kumar, initiator of GMIN.

“We’ve planned to build 10 more schools this year, and I believe that we can do more,” added he.

Also speaking at the event, cofounder of CYF Houshala Thapa said, “2 For Change will encourage organizations to connect and work together. “They shouldn’t compete but act together for change.”

Thapa further informed that CYF has been conducting recreational activities which include poetry, B-boying, photography workshops, and drama for children.

“We have yet to find out the exact number. However, as of now, we know we raised Rs 15,000,” said Ravi Kumar.

According to GMIN, the funds will be invested in a Sindhupalchowk project to build three new classrooms. GMIN has renovated five schools so far, and GMIN is looking forward to renovate a lot more in 2011.

GMIN is organizing a similar fundraising event called “Help Us Help Nepal” which includes live music and a DJ dance party at R Train on 36th Street in Astoria, Queens, New York.

Performing live at the concert are Ayurveda, Samsara, Sangarsha, Corner Stone, and Normal Academy.
