Nepal Police has recently furnished a project proposal to the Nepal Peace Trust Fund (NPTF) for reconstructing 100 more police units. [break]
"We have provided the NPTF a detailed plan prepared by our Technical Support Team (TST) for reconstruction of additional 100 police units across the nation," said DIG Navaraj Dhakal, the Nepal Police spokesman. "We would now engage with NPTF for necessary agreements and further planning."
The ongoing police unit reconstruction project with its cost totaling Rs 1,026,598,300 was started on November 25, 2009. Under this, a total of 100 police units, which even include a couple of district police offices, in selected 70 districts are now under construction.
Reconstruction of police units has been considered a major tool for security sector enhancement in the post-conflict period. NPTF formed under the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction and resourced by a basket fund of eight different donor agencies is co-coordinating the project.
A monitoring report carried out in four districts -- Jhapa, Ilam, Sunsari and Morang -- by an NPTF team in 2010 found the ongoing reconstruction of police units satisfactory.
The report says all six police units in four districts are being reconstructed in strategic locations together with active public participation.
A total of 768 police units were destroyed during the decade-long insurgency creating a colossal vacuum in general security.
