KATHMANDU, Aug 3: The ongoing sporadic rainfall is likely to continue till Tuesday, weather experts have predicted.

Barun Paneru, meteorologist at Meteorological Forecasting Division (MDF) of Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), attributed the weather condition to the movement of monsoon trough toward Nepal.Monsoon trough is the position of intertropical convergence that leads to the formation of low atmospheric pressure above the Ganga River.

"Monsoon rainfall is gaining momentum across the country. The monsoon trough will linger on Nepal's side for at least a day," said Paneru.

Nearly two months have elapsed since the onset of monsoon in Nepal, but the expected rain has been recorded far below the normal rainfall. MFD considers 1400mm of rainfall as standard for the whole monsoon season that usually kicks from the second week of June.

According to Paneru, only 60 to 70 percent of the normal monsoon rainfall has been recorded so far. "We are experiencing a weak monsoon this year. Although July is considered the wettest month of the year, rainfall this year has been disappointing, especially for the farmers who depend solely on rain water," said Paneru.

Experts have blamed the El Nino formation above the Pacific Ocean for the weak surge of monsoon rain in South Asia, including Nepal.
