Pun, Thapa set new national records

MAHENDRANAGAR, Feb 29: Tara Pun of Nepal Police Club and Ram Maya Thapa of PLA Sports Club set two new national records each in weightlifting on Wednesday in the Sixth National Games in Mahendranagar.



In women´s 69 kg weight category, Pun set national records in clean and jerk as well as total lift. [break]



Pun lifted 84 kg in clean and jerk in her first attempt and then lifted 91 kg in her second attempt. Both attempts broke the previous national record of 83 kg set by Pun herself in 2066 BS. After lifting 91 kg in clean and jerk in the second attempt, Pun set a new national record in total lift with a 157 kg lift. Earlier, Jhanta Katuwal had the record of 156 kg total lift to her name. Pun lifted 66 kg in snatch.



Pusho Chaudhary of Eastern Region and Kalpana Chaudhary of Mid-western Region claimed silver and bronze medals respectively.



In women´s above 75 kg weight category, Thapa lifted 50 kg in snatch and 77 kg in clean and jerk for a total of 127 kg. Thapa´s first attempt in clean and jerk lift with 74 kg was a new national record but she lifted 77 kg to set a new national record in total lift. The previous records were set by Laxmi Ban as she had lifted 73 kg in clean and jerk as well as 126 kg total lift.



However, Nepal Police Club´s Ban remained satisfied with a silver medal in Mahendranagar. Manita Chaudhary claimed bronze in the event.



In women´s 75 kg, Champa Thakulla of Far-western Region lifted 40 kg in snatch and 57 kg in clean and jerk to clinch gold medal. Kanta Bhujel of Eastern Region lifted 35 kg in snatch and 52 kg in clean and jerk for silver medal.



Narayan Shrestha of Central Region won the gold in men´s 85 kg group. He lifted 92 kg in snatch and 125 kg in clean and jerk. Bachchu Lal Chaudhary of Eastern Region and Gagan Chand of Nepal Police claimed silver and bronze medals respectively.



In men´s 94 kg, Ram Dayal Mandal of Eastern Region clinched gold after lifting 90 kg in snatch and 115 kg in clean and jerk. Ganesh Bahadur Chand of Far-western and Hira Bahadur Thapa of Nepal Police claimed silver and bronze respectively.



Archery



Central Region won two gold of the three gold medals on Wednesday in Mahendranagar.



The duo of Jeet Bahadur Moktan and Maya Syangtan of Central Region won gold in mixed team events, where Western Region´s Ganga Kunwar and Mina Dura as well as Western´s Khagendra Malla and RL Joshi claimed silver and bronze medals respectively.



In recurve event of men´s team, Ganga Kunwar, Ashim Sherchan, Arjun Gurung teamed up for Western Region to win gold. Prem Prasad Pun, Ramesh Bhattachan, Wangel Gurung and Jeet Bahadur Moktan of Central Region claimed silver.



In recurve event of women´s team, Krishna Maya Syangtan teamed up with Anita Gurung, Radhi Bulun and Alina Limbu to clinch gold for Central Region.



Hockey



Central Region defeated Western Region 2-0 on Wednesday in men´s hockey event being played in Mahendranagar. Harbindar Singh and Som Magar scored a goal each for Central Region.



Meanwhile, the host Far-western Region edged past Mid-western Region 1-0 in a controversial match. Far-western scored the goal in open net as Mid-western walked out after the referee awarded penalty stroke to Far-western.



In the competition being played in round robin format among five teams, Far-western has seven points from three matches while Central Region has six points from two matches.



Golf



Bikash Bogati won the gold medal in individual section of golf played on the Himalayan Golf Course in Pokhara. In the three-day event, Central Region´s Bogati carded 242 in total. Tashi Tshiring and Dinesh Prajapati, both from Central Region, claimed silver and bronze medals respectively.



In team event, Central Region clinched gold medal with a total score of 746. Western and Eastern Region claimed silver and bronze medals respectively.



Wrestling



Central Region won four gold medals in men´s wrestling competition held in Mahendranagar on Wednesday. Western Region claimed two gold medals and PLA Sports Club bagged one of the seven gold medals of the men´s event.



Jawahar Sahani (55 kg), Mukhtar Alam (66 kg), Bunni Lal Raut Ahir (74 kg) and Sumir Kumar Shah (84 kg) won gold medals for Central Region. Baijanath Yadav (60 kg) and Pralhad Yadav (96 kg) clinched gold for Western Region. In men´s 120 kg, Raji Sharan Yadav of PLA sports clinched gold.



Men´s Volleyball



Western Region defeated Eastern Region 25-21, 25-20, 25-19 in men´s volleyball played in Mahendranagar. Likewise, APF edged past Mid-western Region 25-17, 25-12, 15-25, 25-8. Central Region pulled off a 25-17, 26-24, 16-25, 25-21 victory over Universities´ team while Eastern Region beat Far-western 25-16, 22-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-21.



Women´s Football



Armed Police Force, Eastern and Far-western Region won their respective matches on Wednesday in Kanchanpur Khulla Manch. APF defeated PLA Sports Club 5-1. Pramila Rai and Laxmi Paudel scored two goals each for APF while Anu Lama added another. Nirmala Sunuwar scored the consolation goal for PLA. In the second match of the day, Eastern Region thrashed Western Region 5-0 while Far-western edged past Mid-western Region 3-0. Meanwhile, the match between Nepal Police Club and the Universities team ended in a 1-1 draw.


WTF Taekwondo



Manita Shahi of Nepal Police and Ayasha Shakya of Central Region clinched gold medals in women´s 62 kg and 53 kg weight categories respectively.



The 10th South Asian Games medalist Shahi defeated Mira Kaphle of Eastern Region in the final match played in the Mahendranagar Covered Hall on Wednesday. Mina Pun Magar of Mid-western and Pratibha Chand of PLA claimed silver and bronze respectively.



Shakya, the 11th South Asian Games medalist, thrashed Yashoda Khadka of Eastern Region in the final while Kalpana Chaudhary of Far-western and Babita Sijali of Mid-western finished second and third respectively.



In men´s 87 kg weight category, Bharat Kumar Shrestha of Western Region edged past Sabin Kumar Dangol of Central Region in the final while Laxman Maharjan (APF) and Dipendra Kumar Gharti Magar (NPC) bagged silver and bronze respectively.



Sujan Joshi won gold in men´s 62 kg while Yam Bahadur Pun (NPC) claimed silver.



Ramesh Kumar Shrestha (Central), Bishal Shrestha (Far-western) and Bharat Bohora (APF) won gold medals in men´s 80 kg, 58 kg and 74 kg weight categories respectively.



Meanwhile, Sita Tamang (NPC), Sangita Basyal (APF), Gyani Chunara (NPC) and Samjhana Tamang (APF) clinched gold medals in women´s 49 kg, 73 kg, 57 kg and 67 kg weight categories respectively.



Men´s kabaddi



Far-western Region set up a title clash with Central Region in men´s kabaddi after both won their respective matches on Wednesday.



Far-western Region defeated Eastern Region 30-18 to secure a place in the final while Central Region thrashed NPC 61-16.



Full-contact karate



Kanchha Lal Waiba of Central Region and Manju BK of Far-western Region won the open weight competitions of men´s and women´s categories respectively in full contact karate on Wednesday.



Waiba defeated Bijay Ale of Western Region while BK saw off Nirmala Bajracharya of Central Region in the final.



In men´s U-50 kg, Sanjay Rai of Eastern Region clinched gold. Likewise, Sujan Pandey (U-55 kg) of Western Region, Shailendra Maharjan (U-60 kg) of Central Region and Bir Man Lama (U-65 kg) of Central Region won golds in their respective weight categories.



In the women´s section, Mingma Lama (U-50 kg) of Central Region and Bhuvaneshwari Dhami (U-55 kg) of Far-western Region won golds.



ITF taekwondo



Central Region won nine golds in ITF taekwondo on Wednesday. Western Region is second with four golds while APF and PLA have three golds each.



On Wednesday´s matches held in Tikapur, Pukar KC (U-50 kg) of Central Region, Suresh Dhimal (U-55 kg) of Eastern Region, Neroj Rana (U-60 kg) of PLA, Chauchi Dangol (U-65 kg) of PLA, Manoj Khadka (U-70 kg) of Central Region, Harsha Rajbanshi (U-75 kg) of APF, Pawan Tamang (U-80 kg) of Central Region and Shyam Kumar Shrestha (above-80 kg) of APF won gold medals in their respective weight categories.



In the women´s section, Tulasi Thapa (U-45 kg) of Central Region, Muna Bomjan (U-50 kg) of PLA, Mamta Thapa (U-55 kg) of Western Region, Sujita Shrestha (U-60 kg) of Central Region and Seema Khadka (U-65 kg) of Western Region each won gold.



Table Tennis



NPC clinched gold in both men´s and women´s team events in table tennis on Wednesday. NPC defeated APF 3-0 in both categories in Kanchanpur. Western Region finished third in both categories.
