KATHMANDU, Sept 6: Unhappy with government nonchalance over their 24-hour ultimatum to roll back the prices of petroleum products, the agitating students on Thursday enforced nationwide chakka jam for an hour from 9 to 10 am.

They also demonstrated in front of various campuses in the Kathmandu valley including Ratna Rajya Laxmi Campus, Campus of International Languages, Tri Chandra College, Saraswati Campus, Nepal Commerce Campus, and Pulchowk Engineering College, among others.[break]

While the student unions have warned of obstructing government vehicles throughout the country on Friday, they have postponed the valley banda earlier scheduled for 9th September to two days later.

“We are going to intensify protests gradually until and unless the government decides to roll back the fuel prices. We have decided to postpone capital banda by two days as 9th September is BP day,” said Ranjil Karna, coordinator of Nepal Student Union.

The government decision to hike the prices of petroleum products on Sunday night was fifth time in the last nine months. Student unions, including All Nepal National Free Student Union (ANNFSU), All Nepal National Independent Student Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) and Nepal Student Union (NSU) have been carrying out protest programs against the decision starting Tuesday.

Talking to Republica, Karna said it was immoral to increase the prices of petroleum products at a time when skyrocketing prices of all essential items have already jeopardized the lives of common people.

The Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) on Sunday raised the price of petrol by Rs 5 per liter, kerosene and diesel by Rs 4 per liter and the Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) by Rs 55. With the revised price, petrol now costs Rs 125 per liter, diesel and kerosene Rs 97 and LPG costs Rs 1470 per cylinder (14.2 kg).
