Sherchan has claimed that he plotted the massacre while he was the royal intelligence chief. King Birendra along with his entire family was killed in the massacre. Following his dramatic admission, the Metropolitan Police Range Kathmandu has chosen to further investigate into the matter after conducting Sherchan´s thorough mental check-up. The Mental Hospital at Patan has fixed an appointment for him on Sunday. "The specialist told us that it would take no less than three hours for his mental check-up," a senior officer informed.
Sherchan, who lives in a rented house in Nakhipot, Lalitpur, was under strict police surveillance. A section of security officials said that he indeed worked for the then Royal Intelligence wing under the palace administration. A seemingly well-educated person, Sherchan also flaunts his knowledge of security know-how. “A serious investigation needs to be carried out to find the truth," said SP Navaraj Silwal.
Sherchan also claims to possess a video tape of the massacre. However, upon being asked to produce it, he was quoted as telling police officers, "I will produce it only before an authorized commission. If you need to know about me contact CIA directors who took office after the 80s."
Meanwhile, Republica also reached some persons who claimed to have known him for years. They claimed that Sherchan often demonstrated an abnormal behavior and was even arrested by the police in connection to financial irregularities several years ago. Police, however, has not yet confirmed his record on crime.
