KATHMANDU, March 26: A probe commission formed to investigate the loss of life and property during the ‘Gen-Z’ protests has concluded that individuals with criminal intent were involved in the incidents of September 8 and 9. The report, submitted to the government by a commission led by former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki, highlights the role of such elements in escalating violence.
“The violent activities on the 9th were not carried out by the Gen-Z generation, but people from various age groups took to the streets spontaneously along with youths in protest against the events of the 9th,” the report states. “However, after some time, individuals with criminal tendencies and looting groups took advantage of weak security, joining the protesters and engaging in looting, arson, vandalism, assaults on police, and killings, turning the situation chaotic.”
A total of 76 people lost their lives during the two days of unrest, the report notes. Among them, 42 were killed in firing by security forces.
According to the report, three police personnel were killed in attacks by protesters, while the remaining deaths occurred during incidents of looting. It specifies that 32 people died in the course of looting.

“In these incidents, a total of 2,522 people, including security personnel, were injured, and the estimated physical damage amounts to around Rs 85 billion,” the report states.
