NFWA, a government authority overseeing management of fruit market, said the capital was receiving as much as 190 tons of of fruits a day at two wholesale markets, about 90 tons more than the normal demand for supply, thereby pushing prices down. [break]
It said prices dropped between of Rs 5 to Rs 25 per kg for apple, black grapes, green grapes, sweet orange, orange, sugar cane, pomegranates, water melon, papaya and banana among others.
On Tuesday, black grapes was priced at Rs 130 per kg whereas a week ago it was Rs 150 per kg, and green grapes was priced Rs 90 per kg, down from Rs 120 a week ago. Small and big apples fell by Rs 15 per kg from last week´s price of Rs 180 and Rs 95 per kg respectively.
Arjun Parsad, a trader at Nepal Fruits Wholesale Market at Balkhu, said the fall in prices came despite increased demands of fruits as the summer approaches.
Fruit retailer at Koteshwor market Sita Adhikari, said part of the reason was fall in prices in international market, and Nepal depended on India and China for supplies.
