Prices of food commodities soar

KATHMANDU, April 18: Prices of essential food commodities have increased in the market by around 15 percent after traders jacked up their rates referring to low supplies.



Rice, sugar and lentils have become dearer in range of Rs 2 to Rs 20 per kg. Similarly, price of edible oil has also increased by an average of Rs 5 per liter.[break]



"Traders are arbitrarily fixing price of essential commodities because our government has not formulated any law on consumer rights,” said Joyti Baniya, general secretary of Consumer Rights Protection Forum.



“Though food is our basic need, the government is doing nothing to ensure its easy availability,” he said, adding: “Almost 70 percent of the demand is met through imports; still the government is doing nothing.”







On Wednesday, Pokhareli rice cost was sold at Rs 50 per kg, up from last week´s Rs 45 per kg. The price of Basmati rice too has increased by Rs 10 per kg and is selling at Rs 80 per kg and Sano Mansuli rice is selling at Rs 45 per kg up from last week´s Rs 30 per kg.



The price of sugar has also increased by Rs 5 per kg and is selling at Rs 70 per kg. Likewise, mustard oil, sunflower oil and soybean oil have become dearer by Rs 5 per liter each and are selling at Rs 145, Rs 140 and Rs 130 per liter respectively.



Prices of lentils have also increased over the period. “Lentils have become dearer in the market because suppliers themselves have raised the price,” said Ganga Ram Maharjan sales executive of Brown Rice and Health Foods.



The price of Mung Chata has increased by Rs 10 per kg and is selling at Rs 110 per kg. Similarly, prices of Rahar Dal and Musuro Dahal have increased by Rs 5 per kg each and are selling at Rs 105 and Rs 75 per kg.



Mas Dal is selling at Rs 90 per kg, up from last week´s Rs 80 per kg.
