Once the police investigate those arrested for their involvement in the incident within twenty-five days and present the file with its recommendations to the Office of Government Attorney, the chargesheet will be prepared. Saturday marks the 20th day of the attack on Dhakal. [break]
According to District Attorney Punya Prasad Pathak, the chargesheet will be prepared soon and the arrested duo and Basnet who is still at large will be produced before the court.
According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Pradhunya Karki, the police are preparing to present the investigation file with their recommendations. The file currently states that Basnet is absconding. After the chargesheet is presented to the court, it will issue a warrant against Basnet, which will allow the police to arrest him without investigation and present him at the court.
Apart from the statements collected from Koirala and Basnet, there are other evidences that prove that Basnet directed the attack on Dhakal, said Attorney Pathak. According to him, apart from the statements of the accomplices, the statement of the victim and eye-witnesses are also important. Dhakal´s press release from the hospital bed will also be taken into consideration along with all the other evidences to prepare the chargesheet.
President of the Morang chapter of Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Bikram Niraula filed an attempt-to-murder case against Basnet and the other two on June 6, the very next day after the attack on Dhakal. As per the law, in an attempt-to-murder case, the one who gives directions or word to kill, the one who works for it, are sued too, and can be jailed for 5-12 years.
Basnet has been sued not just for attempt-to-murder against Dhakal but also for attempt-to-murder against Giri. The complaint filed by Giri´s wife Anisha at the District Police Office is being processed. The Giri couple has filed a case against Basnet and ten others for the attack at the Court premises.
The police are also investigating that case and will present the accused in the court within 25 days, as per SP Karki. Giri was attacked at the District Court, Morang, by the Basnet group in front of the security personnel. Basnet took responsibility for the attack right after the incident about which Dhakal had written a new report. Basent who was enraged at this very report had ordered the attack on Dhakal, according to the police.
Murky past sure to nail Basnet
KATHMANDU: As per the statements collected from Rohit Koirala and Manoj Rai, the police claim that Basnet´s involvement in the incident is evident enough. Three days before the attack on Dhakal on June 5, Basnet´s group had attacked one Abhishek Giri at the District Court. According to Morang Police, Dhakal did not report about Koirala or Rai, he was attacked because he had written about Basnet, which shows the latter´s link with the case.
Basnet started his political career eight years ago as the president of Nepal Students´ Union for the I Com section of Mahendra Morang Campus and was elected a Free Students´ Union (FSU) member the same year. In 2006, he was elected as the joint secretary of FSU. He joined Youth Force after he was warned for standing in election against FSU´s then presidential candidate Ram Kumar Khatari.
Koirala became the president of Youth Force, Biratnagar, six months ago after he developed relations with Basnet. Before, he was just a member. Rai has been a long-time driver and help of Basnet and does not have any political affiliations. According to a committee member of the CPN-UML, Morang District, Rai acted as Basnet´s bodyguard and was later made a volunteer during which he misbehaved with many female cadres. He was given the party membership only six months ago and has even opened a hotel with Basnet´s blessings.
