BIRATNAGAR, June 12: Youth Force Morang district chief Parshuram Basnet, the main accused in the attack on our correspondent Khilanath Dhakal has managed to evade arrest so far due to the tip-offs from police, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) at the Eastern Regional Police Office in Biratnagar Binod Singh conceded.

"We have learnt about the collusion between police and Basnet, who is absconding. We have kept suspect police personnel under scanner and will suspend those found guilty," DIG Singh said. [break]

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mingmar Lama also conceded that someone within the police might be passing off the information about police strategy. "We may have to move forward with a new strategy to avoid the leakage," Lama, who is the chief of Koshi Zonal Police Office, said without elaborating on the new strategy.

SSP Lama said Basnet might be anywhere from Kathmandu to Kakarbhitta in the east while DIG Singh said four separate teams have been mobilized in the east to nab the fugitive. "A separate team from the Crime Investigation Division in Kathmandu has also been mobilized," DIG Singh added.

Senior police officers expressed grievances that a few inspectors, sub-inspectors and assistant sub-inspectors might be hindering the police initiative. "Basnet managed to escape due to non-cooperation of Morang Police and we feel he is still receiving information," a police officer involved in the investigations claimed.

Chief of Morang Police SP Thakur Ram Bartoula also didn´t rule out the possibility of tip-offs. "Basnet might be in touch with a few police personnel to keep tab of police strategy," SP Bartoula said.

Biratnagar chief of Youth Force Rohit Koirala is the only person the police have managed to nab till date with Basnet, the mastermind, and his aide Manoj Rai who was involved in attacking journalist Dhakal yet to be arrested, five days after an attempt to murder case was lodged against the trio.
