KATHMANDU, April 29: Police on Thursday seized materials used in making improvised petrol bombs from a guesthouse at Sundhara in Kathmandu, two days before the May 1 mass demonstrations and subsequent indefinite general strike called by the Maoists.

The seized materials included 450 liters of petrol, over 1,000 bottles, saw dust and cloth pieces, among others. They were seized from Seti Mahakali Hotel and Lodge. [break]

SP Ramesh Kharel, chief of Metropolitan Police Range Kathmandu, said the materials were enough to make over thousands of petrol bombs. The police also found sackfuls of catapults nd marbels from there.

The seizure took place a couple of hours after Home Minister Bhim Bahadur Rawal held meetings with police officials in the wake of Maoists´ agitation.

Ajay Pandey, the owner of the guesthouse who was also detained for investigation, said one Krishna Ghimire had booked Room No 103 on Wednesday and brought the sacks on Thursday morning.

"He told us that they had brought snacks. I cannot say anything about the motivation behind storing these things," he said. He said another person has not mentioned any details about him in the guest information form.

"Catapults and marbles are something used during demonstrations in the past as well but the seizure of petrol bomb making materials is alarming," Kharel said.

Meanwhile, large number of sticks and knives were seized from public vehicles in Dhankuta and Sarlahi on Thursday.
