BIRJUNG, May 16: District police office in Bara has refused to register a case against a policeman who married a minor girl, that too without divorcing his wife of 12 years.

Suresh Sharma, an armed police of Bhadrakali battalion at Pipula, Bara allegedly married Fulkumari Thakur on May 1. Thakur had dropped out of school last year after completing grade five and her school teachers say she was less than 15-year-old.[break]

Sharma is still legally married to Sanju pending appeal for divorce. They had married in 2000. Sanju went to police station to register complaint against her husband a week ago. However, the office did not register her complaint.

“I went to the station to file case against him. But I was told that they cannot register my complaint,” said Sanju. She claimed her husband tortured since their marriage allegedly for not offering enough dowries. After three years of marriage, he demanded a motorbike and Rs 50,000 from her father. “As his wish was not fulfilled he beat me severely and threw me out of home,” she added.

Sanju accused SP Mahesh Shrestha of saying they could not file the complaint against a policeman.

Suresh had sought divorce in the district court one and half year ago. But as his wife is not willing to grant him this and the case is still in the court.
