KATHMANDU, June 16: Broadcasting Association of Nepal (BAN) on Thursday condemned police raid in Saptakoshi FM station of Itahari, Sunsari.

“BAN strongly condemns the police atrocities in Saptakoshi FM,” a release issued on Thursday said.[break]

According to BAN, police entered the FM station at 5:30 a.m. and obstructed newsroom for three hours in pretext of hiding Parshuram Basnet. Basnet is an accused attacker on journalist Khilanath Dhakal.

“The police, 22 in number and 10 of them in plain cloth, only left after radio management protested their presence,” BAN said.

Police neither presented search warrant nor asked for permission to search, BAN said.

Meanwhile, station manager Chandra Neupane termed the raid ‘a raid on press freedom’. “The incident made clear that media houses are becoming insecure from the state itself,” he said.

He also urged Ministry of Communication to be serious on security of media houses.
