KATHMANDU, Dec 31: Metropolitan Police has come up with a special action plan to curb flesh trade in the capital, focusing on six areas where it is felt the illegal activity is at its height.[break]

The action plan includes regular monitoring of designated areas by plainclothes police and raiding of suspect premises. According to chief of Metropolitan Police Range Kathmandu, Superintendent of Police (SP) Ganesh KC, Thamel, Ratna Park, Gongabu, Balaju, Nagarjun, Koteshwor and Sundhara have been kept under vigilance in view of the relatively frequent movement of sex workers and clients at those localities.

While guest houses, lodges and hotels are the first target for monitoring and crackdown on the flesh trade, Metropolitan Police is also monitoring privately run brothels. "There is a growing trend of running this business at rented flats in the capital," added KC.

Under the action plan, an operation is underway in Thamel, which the Metropolitan Police believes is at a climax in the flesh trade under the cover of tourism.  Eight guest houses in Thamel have been blacklisted by police for allegedly running as regular brothels.

A police team raided two Thamel guest houses Tuesday night and arrested 15 sex workers along with 10 alleged clients. They were even found in compromising situations. All 25 arrested have been remanded on public offense charges.
