KATHMANDU, Feb 5: In a bid to improve traffic management, the Valley Traffic Police have impounded nine overnight buses found parked haphazardly along roadsides across the Kathmandu Valley, obstructing the smooth flow of traffic.
The buses were seized during a special inspection drive conducted at multiple locations, Valley Traffic Police Spokesperson SP Nareshraj Subedi said. He added that some of the buses were operating with route permits that had expired as long as two years ago.
Traffic congestion likely in the following places today
SP Subedi said large public vehicles are not permitted to be parked along roadsides, as such practices contribute significantly to traffic congestion. He added that further action would be taken in coordination with the Department of Transport Management.
The impounded buses are currently being held at the Valley Traffic Police office in Ramshahpath. Officials said the buses, which operate long-distance overnight services, were parked indiscriminately, causing traffic jams and inconvenience to passengers and other road users.
Valley Traffic Police Chief Senior Superintendent Navaraj Adhikari said, “Parking in violation of route permits was severely affecting road traffic. The seized buses will face legal action under Sections 75 and 160 of the Transport Management Act.”
The operation follows a similar drive on Wednesday, during which 15 long-distance overnight buses were impounded for illegal parking.
