SP Joshi, who is posted at the Riot Control Battalion of Nepal Police in Nepalgunj, had hit Binod Koirala of Latikoili, Surkhet at Harre along the Surkhet-Nepalgunj highway with his vehicle (Ba 1 Jha 8065). [break]
Joshi was coming to Surkhet for a training. A seriously injured Koirala is currently being treated at the B&B Hospital in Kathmandu with four fractures in his legs while SP Joshi has not even bothered to contact the family after the accident.
Surkhet Police registered the complaint only at three in the afternoon with SP Govinda Pariyar initially insisting that a police constable was behind the wheel. But SP Pariyar was forced to accept the complaint after injured Koirala faxed a written statement from Kathmandu claiming that SP Joshi himself was driving the vehicle.
“Law of the land is equal for every individual. We have lodged the complaint as we believe that everybody should be punished under the same yardstick whether the offender is a police officer or a commoner,” stated Govinda Koirala, the victim´s kid brother.
The victim´s family has demanded that an innocent constable should not be punished to protect a guilty police officer. SP Pariyar said police will now initiate investigation into the accident after accepting the complaint.
An eyewitness claimed that SP Joshi had not even showed urgency to rescue Koirala after the accident.
“SP Joshi and other police personnel stood as mere spectators even as the injured Koirala was writhing in pain,” Rishi Giri, who was also present at the Surkhet District Police Office premises Tuesday, said. “Police joined in only after I myself tried to pick him up,” Giri added.
A police team from the Area Police Office, Chhinchu had escorted SP Joshi to Surkhet while Koirala was taken to Nepalgunj in the vehicle that was driven by Joshi.
