KATHMANDU, Sept 8: At a time when the opposition parties including Nepali Congress are demanding Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai´s immediate resignation, his political advisor Devendra Paudel has said the prime minister will step down only after the political parties reach consensus to end the deadlock.

Paudel said the parties should immediately forge consensus on all contentious issues of new statute and way to move ahead. "The prime minister is always ready to step down," he said. [break]

Addressing an interaction organized by Reporters´ Club Nepal in the capital on Saturday, Paudel argued that the resignation of the prime minister before the parties could reach to an agreement could push the country toward a catastrophe. "The country could plunge into a catastrophe so, the prime minister won´t resign until the parties reach consensus," he said.

Paudel also said that the CA could be revived for a few days if there was consensus among parties to resolve all contentious issues of the new statute. He, however, added that his party, the UCPN (Maoist), is prepared for both the alternatives -- fresh election and the revival of the CA.

On a separate note, Paudel also said that fewer than expected number of former Maoist combatants opting for integration would not affect the government´s decision to form separate directorate under the Nepal Army. The formation of a seprate directorate for the former Maoist combatants would move ahead as per the agreement reached among the political parties in the past," he said.

Paudel also said that it would not be acceptable to the Maoists if the directorate is not formed citing fewer Maoist combatnats opting for integration.
