PM urged to restore Nepal-India ties to pre-constitution state

KATHMANDU, Feb 8: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Monday held consultations with former prime ministers, foreign ministers and diplomats as he is scheduled to pay an official visit to India later this month.

During the consultations organized at prime minister’s residence in Baluwatar, the former prime ministers, foreign ministers and the diplomats have suggested to the prime minister to restore Nepal-India relations to what they were before the promulgation of the new constitution.


“Most of the former prime ministers, foreign ministers and diplomats have suggested to Prime Minister Oli to utilize the visit to mend the relations between the two countries,” said the Prime Minister’s foreign affairs advisor Gopal Khanal.
“It should be purely a goodwill and confidence-building visit,” he said quoting the former ministers.
The prime minister has also assured to maintain Nepal’s international relations as per its foreign policy based on the UN Charter, non-alignment, principles of Panchasheel, international law and the norms of world peace, taking into consideration the overall interests of the nation. The prime minister has also reiterated that he would not compromise on national sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence and national interest of Nepal, according to foreign affairs advisor Khanal.
Former Prime Ministers Madhav Kumar Nepal and Jhalanath Khanal; former head of government Khil Raj Regmi; former foreign ministers Sujata Koirala, Bhekh Bahadur Thapa and Madhav Ghimire; former foreign secretary Madhu Raman Acharya, former ambassador Rukma Shumsher JBR among others participated in the consultation. However, former prime ministers Lokendra Bahadur Chand, Sushil Koirala, Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Baburam Bhattarai were not present on the occasion.
The prime minister is scheduled to visit India from February 19 to 23.
