PM promises support to NAST

LALITPUR, May 19: Prime Minister and Chancellor of Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Madhav Kumar Nepal said the government is committed to mobilize maximum available resources for the development o science and technology which can usher in economic prosperity.



Inaugurating a newly constructed laboratory building of the academy on Wednesday, he said government effort alone was not sufficient for the development of NAST and collaboration and cooperation of private and industrial units and local and international organizations is a must for research and development in the science and technology sector.



He called on scientists with NAST to best utilize the available infrastructure and resources so that the government can also be motivated to invest more in the sector.



“Research alone is not sufficient. The results should benefit the country and the people. Research should be linked to the prosperity of the country and its people,” he said.



He promised possible support for infrastructure development, equipment purchase and training for NAST.



He called on scientists to link researches with agriculture development, promotion of biodiversity and herbs, promotion of alternative energy and modernization of traditional professions.







Joint chancellor and Minister of State for Science and Technology Indra Prasad Dhungel urged NAST scientists to make Nepal proud in the world through their researches.



Vice chancellor Prof Dr Homnath Bhatarai said annual budget allocation is needed to make the new laboratory equipped with modern equipment and other resources.



On the occasion, the prime minister released a book “Contemporary Research in Sagarmatha Region, Nepal”. VC Bhatarai awarded fellowships to the first batch of PHD fellows.



The new lab building spread in over three ropanis of land was constructed at a cost of Rs 70 million. Tests on biotechnology, natural product chemistry, environment and alternative energy are being carried out in the lab at present.
