KATHMANDU, Aug 29: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli will begin a five-day visit to China starting Saturday to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit. He briefed the House of Representatives about the trip on Friday. He shared ten key points regarding the visit.
The prime minister stated that the main purpose of the visit is to attend the SCO Summit, which was established in 2001 and has grown into one of the largest regional organizations globally. Full member countries include China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Belarus, while Afghanistan and Mongolia are observer states.
He also highlighted that Nepal, along with countries such as Turkey, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the Maldives, Myanmar, Bahrain, and the UAE, is a dialogue partner of the SCO. Nepal has been a dialogue partner since 2016, and the aim is to enhance Nepal’s participation, present the country’s perspective on regional and international issues, and promote Nepal’s national interests.
PM Oli scheduled to visit China from Dec 2
During the visit, Prime Minister Oli will hold bilateral meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Vice President Han Zheng, and also attend separate official dinners hosted by both leaders.
On September 16, he will participate in the SCO Plus Summit in Tianjin, where he will deliver a speech and hold bilateral meetings with leaders of various friendly nations. The government has confirmed Oli’s meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Laotian Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.
The prime minister added that the final program includes attending the 80th anniversary of China’s victory in the World War and the War of Resistance in Beijing on September 18, with participation from over 50 countries.
PM Oli expressed confidence that the visit will strengthen Nepal-China bilateral relations, enhance Nepal’s international image and reputation, and present Nepal’s views and priorities on various contemporary issues at the international forum.
The delegation accompanying the prime minister will include Radhika Shakya, former Deputy Prime Minister and House member Purna Bahadur Khadka, Minister for Education, Science and Technology Raghuji Pant, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Badri Prasad Pande, former Minister and economic advisor Dr Yubaraj Khatiwada, former Minister and House member Chhabilal Bishwakarma, and other senior government officials.
