PM asks banda enforcers to call off protests

KATHMANDU, May 2: Prime Minister Babu Ram Bhattarai Wednesday expressed serious concern over banda called by various organizations in different parts of the country over the issue of federalism, and asked them to call off their protests immediately and sit for talks with the government.



In a press statement on Wednesday, Bhattarai urged all the political parties, civil society and journalists to create favorable environment for talks. [break]



“I expect support and patience from people of all classes, community, indigenous, genders and regions at this important time when we have to promulgate the new constitution of the federal democratic Nepal along with progressive state restructuring,” the statement said.



Saying that that the activities like bandas have prevented sovereign citizens to move freely, run business houses, attend schools and colleges, he asked everyone to play a constructive role for the promulgation of new constitution.



Bhattarai reiterated the government was committed to promulgate the new constitution in the given time frame.



The prime minister´s appeal came amid banda called by groups for undivided far westerner region, a counter banda of Tharu organizations and banda called by Mithila State Struggle Committee demanding the formation of Mithila state.
