A meeting of the PHSC held at Singha Durbar concluded the hearings on the nominations of Shankar Bairagi (Permanent Representative of Nepal to the UN, Geneva), Mukti Nath Bhatta (Denmark) and Rudra Nepal (Australia). The PHSC is scheduled to resume hearings on the remaining seven nominations on Friday morning as the meeting on Thursday was cut short due to various preoccupations of lawmakers in the committee. During the hearing, the committee members asked envoy-nominees about their specializations, how they would promote Nepal´s interests and international affairs.
Earlier, the PHSC had put off the hearing arguing that the list of nominated envoys was not inclusive. The committee began the hearing after Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) sent a letter clarifying that the government was committed to ensure ´inclusiveness´ wherever possible.
Besides Bairagi, Bhatta and Nepal, the cabinet meeting had nominated Bharat Raj Paudyal (Pakistan), Paras Ghimire (Myanmar) and Pralhad Prasain (Israel) as envoys from among career diplomats. Likewise, the cabinet had nominated Maoist party loyalists Ravi Mohan Sapkota (Russia), Ram Mani Pokharel (Belgium), Dr Maya Kumari Sharma (Qatar) and Kaman Singh Lama (South Korea) as envoys from among political appointees.
