Peace, stability India's main concerns

KATHMANDU, April 21: Indian External Minister SM Krishna held separate meetings on Thursday with senior leaders of CPN-UML Madhav Kumar Nepal and K P Sharma Oli and with Nepali Congress (NC) President Sushil Koirala and urged them to work together for successful conclusion of peace process and constitution-drafting.



Expressing concerns over the fragility of the peace and constitution drafting process, Minister Krishna stressed on the need for national consensus, and sought views about the fate of peace and constitution-drafting after the deadline to promulgate the new constitution expires on May 28.[break]

 

Talking to media persons after his meeting with Krishna, NC President Koirala said Krishna was concerned about ongoing peace process and constitution-drafting. “India is worried about Nepal´s stability,” he said. “India wishes that all political parties work together to ensure effective law and order situation in the country.” Koirala said that India is also concerned over promulgation of a ´democratic constitution´.



Former Prime Minister Nepal told media persons that peace and stability in Nepal were the prime concerns of India. “I have said that there is a need of broader consensus among political parties,” he said, adding: “There is a need of national consensus government comprising all major parties including Maoist, NC, UML and Madhes-based parties.”



According to sources, Krishna also met Chief of Army Staff Chhatra Man Singh Gurung to learn about the country´s security situation and discuss the possible scenario in the event of Maoists opting for revolt. Krishna is scheduled to hold meeting with Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Friday morning and express India´s concerns. He held separate meetings with four Madhesi leaders including Sarbendra Nath Shukla, Jitendra Dev, Rajendra Mahato and Mahendra Yadav.
