“The peace process would not reach its logical conclusion unless the relatives of the persons disappeared during the conflict get justice,” said Bishnu Pukar Shrestha, a human rights activist. [break]
Speaking at an interaction organized by Nepal South Asia Centre on Kathmandu on Wednesday, anthropologist Dr Birendra Mishra said amnesty to perpetrators of violence is a betrayal to the conflict victims. “Hundreds of people were disappeared during the Maoist insurgency. Granting amnesty to the perpetrators of human rights violations would be a betrayal to the conflict victims,” added Mishra.
Mishra further said that the integration of the Maoist ex-combatants is only a part of the peace process. “Peace process would reach its logical conclusion only when the victims of insurgency get justice.”
Vice Chairperson of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists Yasoda Timilsina accused the government of not being serious toward addressing the concerns of the victims of the decade-long Maoist insurgency.
“Not bringing the perpetrators of human rights violations to justice would be a mockery of the rule of law,” said professor Dr Krishna Khanal.
