Parents worry over arbitrary pricing of books

POKHARA, April 16: With the start of new academic session in schools, parents are again beginning to worry about the arbitrary manner in which prices of course books are fixed.

In lack of effective monitoring by the district education office (DEO), publishers, distributors and even schools are charging different rates for the same book. [break]

Encouraging such arbitrariness is the practice of some publishers of not mentioning prices in the books.

The education department had issued a directive a month ago to all DEOs instructing them to monitor the market to ensure that same books were available at uniform rates.

Dissatisfied ´district civil monitoring committee´ on Monday drew attention of the district administration office on the matter and complained about the inaction of District Education Officer Chandra Kanta Bhusal.

According to the coordinator of the committee Rambahadur Paudel, parents are being cheated due to the negligence of DAO Bhusal. “We asked the district administration officer Chetnath Bhattarai to take action and he has assured us that he will look into the matter immediately,” Paudel said.

DEO Bhusal has, however, denied the allegations that he was not monitoring the market. Although he admitted that he has not submitted the report sought by the education department yet. "When we went to inspect the market, but found that the prices were uniform," Bhusal said.
