Panel recommends action against perpetrators

KATHMANDU, Jan 16: The investigation committee formed to monitor recent cases of gender-based violence on Wednesday afternoon submitted its report to Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai.



The report recommended speedy investigation into the cases of Sita Rai, Saraswati Subedi, Siba Hasmi and Binda Thakur, and Chhorimaiya Maharjan, among others. Prime Minister Bhattarai expressed his commitment to do the needful to ensure that the recommendations would be seriously followed. [break]



An eight-member high level committee led by the prime minister had been formed to investigate into cases of violence against women on 30 December, 2012.



Talking to Republica, member of the committee and spokesperson for the National Women Commission Monha Ansari said that one of the important finding of the committee was the existence of trafficking syndicate at the immigration department of the Tribhuvan International Airport.



"Moreover, an individual simply feels intimated by the behavior of immigration officials at the airport. This needs to change," she said, "PM sounded very concerned and he immediately directed the chief secretary to work on the recommendations. If the recommendations are followed, justice will be done to the victim."
