Over 100 cargo vehicles enter Nepal from Bhairahawa

BUTWAL, Sept 30: Over 100 vehicles loaded with essential goods, including petroleum products, on Wednesday entered Nepal via Nepal-India border checkpoint of Belahiya, Bhairahawa.

According to Bhairahawa customs office, 55 trucks laden with essential goods, six tankers carrying petroleum products, two bullets of cooking gas (LPG), five tankers with oxygen and 36 pick-up vans were among the vehicles that entered Nepal via Belahiya checkpoint.The entry of vehicles, reportedly blocked by India, were allowed passage from Wednesday afternoon following a meeting of the security and customs officials of Nepal and India. As per the decision, both sides have agreed to ensure smooth entry of vehicles to Nepal from India.

Earlier, vehicles laden with the supplies had been stranded along 50 km stretch in the Indian side for around a week. The stranded tankers and other trucks with goods are being escorted by the Indian police.

Nepal Police Inspector Rabin Babu Regmi said that the Indian officials were concerned about the security of their drivers.

SSP Ganesh KC, chief of Lumbini Zonal Police, assured the Indian officials during the meeting that tough security measures will be arranged for the Indian vehicles.

"We do not have any security related problems in any areas including Belhiya border checkpoint. We've arranged effective security for the Indian transporters," said SSP KC.

The entry of vehicles carrying various supplies from India to Nepal is underway, according to Bhairahawa customs office.

It has been learnt that the Seema Suraksha Bal (SSB) personnel have chased away protestors of United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) from 'no man's land' on Wednesday.

Protestors attack security forces in Bardiya

Protestors on Wednesday attacked district chiefs of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force (APF) at Mainapokhari along the Nepalgunj-Gulariya road section, according to Bardiya-based Republica correspondent, Nirmal Ghimire.

They hurled stones and bricks targeting SP Govindaram Pariyar of Nepal Police and SP Bidur Gurung of APF. However, both managed to escape unscratched.

Three police personnel were injured during the attack. Police lobbed eight teargas canisters to bring the situation under control, as per District Police Office, Bardiya.

Meanwhile, police thrashed over a dozen protestors who were involved in blocking transportation at Mainapokhari. Condition of three women demonstrators is said to be critical, according to Govinda Tharu, coordinator for Tharu Samyukta Sangharsha Samiti.
