Likewise, former prime ministers Surya Bahadur Thapa and Lokendra Bahadur Chand also returned their vehicles on Sunday, according to Shankar Koirala, spokesman at the home ministry. Thapa and Chand had on Friday had asked the government to take back the vehicles.[break]
Former prime ministers Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Madhav Kumar Nepal, Jhalanath Khanal and former home ministers Bamdev Gautam and Bhim Rawal, among others, had returned their vehicles on Saturday.
Khadka, who returned the vehicle Sunday at Singha Durbar, took a taxi to return home after attending the meeting of the parliamentary State Affairs Committee (SAC).
The apex court in its recent verdict instructed the government to formulate a law with regard to providing vehicles to former prime ministers, home ministers, chief justices and other retired officials and offer such benefit only in accordance with the laws.
Meantime, the government has started works to bring in a new law at the earliest to regulate state benefits provided to former top public officials and has assigned a team of secretaries to submit a draft bill within couple of days.
Meanwhile, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority has asked the Ministry of Finance to stop providing funds for the privileges to the VIPs. The commission has also asked the media and others concerned to inform the comission if anyone is found using the privileges ignoring the Superme Court order.
