Chaudhari, a resident of Sadhi village in Supauli VDC-9, was killed on August 15. The team led by NWC Chairperson Shesh Chandtara accused the state authorities of being biased toward the plight of women in our society.
The team has also claimed that no officials from the District Administration Office have visited the village where the murder took place even nine days after the incident.
“The constitution guarantees equal treatment to women. But, the government authorities do not treat the women equally,” said Mohana Ansari, one of the member of the NWC team. “A woman has been killed on the charge of witchcraft but the government authorities have been acting like nothing has happened at all,” Ansari added.
According to Ansari, during their study no governmental and non-governmental organization conducted awareness programs in Supauli VDC. She said the incident took place due to the lack of awareness among the locals. [break]
“Nowadays, everyone carries a cell phone. Had anyone informed the police about the incident, Parvati´s live could have been saved,” Ansari opined. The team also claimed that no other government authority except the police seemed to be informed about the incident even as two women were tortured on the charge of witchcraft and one of them killed within 12 days in the district.
On August 5, Sursati Devi Chaurasiya, 50, of Bisrampur-1 in the district was forcibly fed human excrement. Chaurasiya has also been driven out of the village after the incident.
Police held three women in connection with the murder of Parvati Chaudhari. Other 9 accused of involvement in the murder have been absconding.
A week ago on Thursday evening , influential locals in the village had accused Parvati of practicing witchcraft and had ordered her and her husband Bhagan Tharu to leave the village. However , Parvati was beaten to death on the same night as they were planning to leave the village on Friday.
